The Beachcroft Mooting Shield
Mooting is an exercise that allows law students the opportunity
to practice their skills. It calls for the application of
theoretical legal knowledge to practical, focused situations.
Although this has traditionally been the preserve of prospective
barristers, with the increasing advocacy involved within commercial
litigation, it is an exercise which all law students will find
useful and of lasting benefit. Beachcroft therefore initiated the
Beachcroft Mooting Shield in October 2009, a team
from Leeds Metropolitan
University won the Shield in March 2010.
We are now accepting entries for the 2010/2011
competition. Application forms can be obtained from the 'Downloads'
section of this website.
The Beachcroft Mooting Shield is based on a group league
format, with universities throughout Yorkshire, Manchester and
the North-East competing against each other, followed by
semi-finals and a grand final. Moots take place on average
every 3 weeks, with all the administration and organisation
undertaken by Beachcroft.
Moots are judged by lawyers from both Beachcroft and
established barristers' Chambers throughout the region. The issues
debated during the moots are based on those areas of law in
which we specialise, giving students an excellent opportunity to
develop advocacy skills and increase their confidence by presenting
their cases to experts in that field.
As well as receiving the prestigious Beachcroft Mooting Shield,
the winning team of students also receive a week's work placement
at the firm. A further prize is awarded for the best overall
advocate.
